Questions about Phrase

Recording and transcripts, notes and the assistant, devices, sync and privacy.

Getting started

What is Phrase?

Phrase is an AI note taker for iPhone, iPad and Mac, with an Apple Watch app for recording. Record a meeting, a lecture or a thought, or bring in audio, video, PDFs and photos, and Phrase turns it into a note: a summary, the decisions and to-dos, and a transcript with timestamps. The original stays attached, and every line of the note can be edited.

Who is Phrase for?

People whose work happens in conversations: client meetings, one-to-ones, interviews, site visits and workshops. Students use it for lectures and revision, and anyone can use it for voice memos and quick ideas.

When should I use Phrase instead of Voice Memos or a notes app?

When a recording has to become something you can act on. Voice Memos keeps the audio, and on supported iPhones a transcript. Phrase keeps the audio too and adds a structured note with a summary and to-dos, search across all your notes, and an assistant that drafts the follow-up. If you only need the recording, Voice Memos is enough.

Is Phrase free? What does the free tier include?

Phrase is free to download on iPhone, iPad and Mac. The free tier keeps up to 100 notes at a time and includes one free media-to-note conversion; deleting notes frees up slots once they are removed from Trash. Pro includes unlimited notes, further media-to-note conversions, the AI features, and iCloud Sync, with the current usage allowance shown in the app. One Pro subscription covers iPhone, iPad and Mac.

Recording and transcripts

How does Phrase turn a recording into a note?

Record in Phrase, or import an audio or video file. Phrase uploads it for processing, transcribes it and builds the note: a title, a summary, organized sections and to-dos. The note appears once processing finishes, and the recording stays attached, so you can play back any line.

What languages does Phrase transcribe?

More than 100. Phrase detects the language on its own, even when a conversation switches language partway through. Search works in every language, including Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

Can Phrase record a Zoom, Teams or FaceTime call?

No. Phrase records what your device’s microphone hears and never joins a call as a bot, which makes it a fit for meetings in a room. On a Mac it does not capture audio from other apps, and through headphones the far side of a call never reaches the microphone. To use a call, import its recording.

What can I import into Phrase?

Audio files, video, PDFs and photos, up to 8 images in one note. You can also start from a recording or a blank note. On iPhone and iPad, import from inside Phrase; to use a Voice Memos recording, save it to Files first.

What happens if processing fails?

Phrase creates the note only when processing succeeds, so a failed task never leaves an empty or half-finished note in your library. You can try the task again.

Can I go back to the original recording?

Yes. The recording, video, PDF or photos stay attached to the note. Play audio and video with the transcript beside it, search the transcript, copy it or read it full screen. On iPhone, tap a line to play that moment; on Mac, click its timestamp.

Notes and search

Can I edit the notes Phrase writes?

Yes, every line. A note is a document you can edit: headings, lists, to-dos, quotes, photos, code, formulas and diagrams. Move blocks around, check off to-dos and undo any change.

Does Phrase support code, formulas and diagrams?

Yes. Type / for a code block, a formula written in LaTeX or a Mermaid diagram. Formulas are typeset on the device by SwaTex, our open-source engine, and every block stays editable.

How does search work in Phrase?

Search looks through titles, summaries and everything written in your notes, in any language. You can also ask the assistant a question: it answers from your notes and shows the notes it used, so you can open them and check.

The assistant, slides and study

What can the AI assistant do?

Ask it about one note or all of them. It finds, reads, edits and organizes notes, builds slide decks, flashcards and quizzes, drafts emails and messages, and adds reminders and calendar events. Anything sensitive waits for your OK, and it never sends anything itself. The assistant is part of Pro.

Can Phrase make slides from my notes?

Yes, with Pro. Ask for a deck and Phrase builds the slides from the note. Present full screen, or connect a display over AirPlay, USB-C or HDMI and keep your iPhone as the controller while the slides show on the big screen. Decks export to PDF.

Can Phrase make flashcards, quizzes and mind maps?

Yes, with Pro. They are made from your notes, so every card and question traces back to something that was said or written. Study in Phrase; quizzes explain each answer.

What else can Phrase make from a note?

Pages, dashboards and small web apps, next to slide decks and study sets. Each one lives beside your notes, links back to the notes it came from, and changes when you ask for changes.

Devices and sync

Does Phrase have a Mac app?

Yes. Phrase for Mac is a native Mac app with the iPhone app’s core features, recording included. It needs macOS 26 or later and runs on Apple silicon and Intel Macs. It records with the Mac’s microphone. Phrase is one App Store listing, so one Pro subscription covers iPhone, iPad and Mac, and with Pro your notes sync between them through iCloud.

Does Phrase work on iPad and iPhone Duo?

Yes. Phrase is one app for iPhone and iPad, on iOS or iPadOS 26 or later. On iPhone Duo it works on the outer display and the inner display, folded or open: fold or unfold in the middle of a note and you stay in the same place, with the audio still playing.

Does Phrase work with Apple Watch, Control Center and widgets?

Yes. Start a recording from the Phrase app on Apple Watch, or from the Control Center and Lock Screen control on iPhone, which opens Phrase ready to record. Home Screen widgets show your notes, lists and to-dos.

How does sync work?

With Pro, your notes and their recordings sync through your own iCloud across iPhone, iPad and Mac. There is no Phrase account to create. Turning a recording into a note and the AI features use cloud processing, separately from sync.

Privacy and support

Where are my notes stored?

Your note library lives on your devices, and with Pro it syncs through your own iCloud. To make a note, Phrase uploads the recording for processing in the cloud, and AI features send the relevant text to an AI service. The privacy policy has the details.

How can I contact support?

Email hello@phrase.so, or use Send Feedback in Phrase’s Settings, which fills in your app version and device for you. A person reads every message.

Still have a question?
